Summary

In honour of the centennial of the birth of J。D。 Salinger in 1919, Penguin reissues all four of his books in beautiful commemorative hardback editions - with artwork and text based on the very first Salinger editions published in the 1950s and 1960s。

'If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth。'

The first of J。 D。 Salinger's four books to be published, The Catcher in the Rye is one of the most widely read and beloved of all contemporary American novels。

A story that has no ending but is still beautiful, just like life with no definite ending but we still live to experience。 The boy holden is just a representation of almost everyone who are just clueless about what entices or excites them and they just go in a shell where they are the best and everyone else is just a phony person ! Catcher in the rye - A classic certainly !

I was talking about how I was having a bad time reading this book, and my boss said to me “it only makes sense when you read it as a teenager” and that’s it。 That’s exactly it。 Young me would probably LOVE this book。 Adult me is just very annoyed every time she reads the word “phony”。

I was probably expecting too much from this book because of the reason I read it。 It was not bad and I was intrigued at first, but the fact that he keeps repeating himself is quite redundant。 I understand why he does it of course, but I just didn’t understand the point of the book once I read the last pages and basically nothing had happened or changed。

To me, this book was a fluctuating experience。 At times, I was intrigued by the unique style that Salinger has used in the narration, however, at times the repetitive nature of the style made me like it a little less。 There are a lot of insights into human behaviour if one pays attention。 At times, I was wondering if I am trying to read in between the lines too much but other times it just made sense - Holden's observations about people around him。 The repetitions did get a bit boring at times b To me, this book was a fluctuating experience。 At times, I was intrigued by the unique style that Salinger has used in the narration, however, at times the repetitive nature of the style made me like it a little less。 There are a lot of insights into human behaviour if one pays attention。 At times, I was wondering if I am trying to read in between the lines too much but other times it just made sense - Holden's observations about people around him。 The repetitions did get a bit boring at times but Holden's journey did keep me engaged until the end。 。。。more

3。5 but closer to 4。Holden is one of the most interesting characters I have encountered, and I enjoyed seeing his thoughts and mindset throughout the 3 days we got to spend with him。This is one of the best book assignments I was given, and I enjoyed it a ton。 The only problem I had with it is that I felt like I was reading someone's diary; it felt a little childish at some points。 Other than that, I enjoyed spending these 277 pages with Holden。 3。5 but closer to 4。Holden is one of the most interesting characters I have encountered, and I enjoyed seeing his thoughts and mindset throughout the 3 days we got to spend with him。This is one of the best book assignments I was given, and I enjoyed it a ton。 The only problem I had with it is that I felt like I was reading someone's diary; it felt a little childish at some points。 Other than that, I enjoyed spending these 277 pages with Holden。 。。。more

I have been forced to read many books in English classes。 The Catcher in the Rye by J。D。 Salinger made me realize how much better the other books were。 No joke。I expected some sort of deep struggle that would allow for Holden Caulfield to at least wonder if the corruption around him is not due to his peers, but, rather, the authoritative figure the adults create to oppress change。 However, I was disappointed when the book went down a path where Holden became a complete pessimist who self-destruc I have been forced to read many books in English classes。 The Catcher in the Rye by J。D。 Salinger made me realize how much better the other books were。 No joke。I expected some sort of deep struggle that would allow for Holden Caulfield to at least wonder if the corruption around him is not due to his peers, but, rather, the authoritative figure the adults create to oppress change。 However, I was disappointed when the book went down a path where Holden became a complete pessimist who self-destructs instead of a protagonist who challenges society。 The Catcher in the Rye is depressing in nature due to its dark and careless tone, and the unsuccessful attempt at a narration through the speech of a teenager drastically compromises the flow。 The narration is unsuccessful due to over use of slang such as adding “and all” to the end of each phrase。 In speech, that is acceptable and quite common; however, since this is text, these phrases start holding the reader up without adding much to Holden’s character。 Holden's speech is annoying。 Really annoying。 With Holden’s depressing conclusions he reaches after telling anecdotes such as “People never notice anything” and “People never believe you,” The Catcher in the Rye gave me an increasing desire to stop reading。 Salinger’s work did nothing but frustrate and haunt me。 Holden’s negativity almost affected my outlook on life, even though I usually see the glass as half full。 One may justify Holden’s actions and the sombre tone of the book by arguing the 1950s were a period of time where children didn’t have much freedom and were pressed by adults to go to strict prep schools and get good grades。 However, even if this would have been a valid reason to challenge authority, it would not have been any reason to denigrate everyone。 A brilliant example to challenge society whilst still uniting with friends and not dejecting oneself from civilization is Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd。 The entire song is based upon how teachers at prep schools suppress freedom of expression, just like in the film, Dead Poets Society, where we see students overcome oppression through battling it in unison。 Both of these examples prove how one can fight if united with others, so Holden’s excuses that everyone around him stinks are invalid。The Catcher in the Rye is a painful read。 I would not recommend reading it。 As I would much rather not have read it and become enshrouded in the pessimism that radiates from it。 One star from me。 。。。more

Holden Caulfield is a phony as much as everyone else he thinks of as phony, as much as everyone IS a phony。 It kills me。 We'd still never be friends though。 He's the biggest phony if I've ever seen one, it kills me。 but I hope he got rid of that attitude and eventually became a catcher in the rye。 My generation echos the experience Caulfield had from his hypocritical distain at the loss of innocence and the superficial personas, feeling powerless and taken advantage of as one person against the Holden Caulfield is a phony as much as everyone else he thinks of as phony, as much as everyone IS a phony。 It kills me。 We'd still never be friends though。 He's the biggest phony if I've ever seen one, it kills me。 but I hope he got rid of that attitude and eventually became a catcher in the rye。 My generation echos the experience Caulfield had from his hypocritical distain at the loss of innocence and the superficial personas, feeling powerless and taken advantage of as one person against the societal machine with all it's ugliness and just plain old anger at being unable to look at the privileges one was born with and truly appreciate it。-Holden Caulfield hates hypocrities but he is also a hypocrite, he complains about phonies and how superficial everyone can be and then goes on to hate everything about everyone else including 'people whose suitcases are not as good as his' because it would mean facing his privilege and what he was doing with it。 Is he choosing to find better company? Is he figuring out what he really wants to do? He consumes himself in all that he hates and also recognises that it's rare for him to figure out what he truly appreciates and wants to do more of in the present moment because he sees no point in doing anything because it's all doomed anyway。 We all have days when we simply want to hate everything and everyone in society and the way the world works but soon, it's time to step away, face our own hypocritical views on life and figure out if we were to be the catchers in the rye, where can we begin。 If you're not happy with your company, change your company or change yourself。 Be the change you want to see。The narrator can be very enraging in his views on life and people, sometimes funny in his observations of his prep school buddies but also very relatable in some of his past reflections about his teenage crush, spending time with his deceased brother, his love & admiration for his sister but the most poignant moment was his insight on visits to the museum - "The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was。 Nobody’d move。 。 。 。 Nobody’d be different。 The only thing that would be different would be you。" 。。。more

I didn’t actually enjoy reading this book but it’s merit came alive more when I took some time to reflect on it afterwards。 I’d recommend it to people looking for an accessible classic because it’s certainly easy to read, but I wouldn’t recommend it as something to be enjoyed。 Even if I’d read it when I was also an angsty and disillusioned 17 year old I’m not sure I would’ve quite believed Holden as a character, but there are definitely interesting discussions to be had around what he represents I didn’t actually enjoy reading this book but it’s merit came alive more when I took some time to reflect on it afterwards。 I’d recommend it to people looking for an accessible classic because it’s certainly easy to read, but I wouldn’t recommend it as something to be enjoyed。 Even if I’d read it when I was also an angsty and disillusioned 17 year old I’m not sure I would’ve quite believed Holden as a character, but there are definitely interesting discussions to be had around what he represents。 I’m just glad I finally understand the title。 For years I’ve wondered, what the hell is a catcher in the rye? 。。。more

Really enjoyed it, nothing like I have read before。 Holden Caulfield is an asshole and is extremely misogynistic but also relatable as in wanting to preserve his and others innocence of the "outer" adult world, especially that of his sister。 I saw him often as a lonely character that is trying to reach out to others but the people he is talking to just do not understand or rather do not want to understand what is going on through his mind, but who can blame them, he is extremely pessimistic and Really enjoyed it, nothing like I have read before。 Holden Caulfield is an asshole and is extremely misogynistic but also relatable as in wanting to preserve his and others innocence of the "outer" adult world, especially that of his sister。 I saw him often as a lonely character that is trying to reach out to others but the people he is talking to just do not understand or rather do not want to understand what is going on through his mind, but who can blame them, he is extremely pessimistic and simultaneously to him trying to reach out he also shut out others around him。 Although Holden is not a very likable character and untrustworthy narrator something about his mind is interesting and enjoyable to read about。 Really enjoyed reading this。 。。。more

3。5 ⭐ I know I'm supposed to have loved this "classic" piece of American literature but I'm still processing。 I understand that the concepts are deeper than surface level, I guess I'm trying to say that I was more frustrated with the lack of concern for this young man's emotional health than anything。 Holden needs a life coach, a school counselor or just a mentor of some kind to really invest in him。 It was difficult to see such a lost young man potentially squandering his access to an education 3。5 ⭐ I know I'm supposed to have loved this "classic" piece of American literature but I'm still processing。 I understand that the concepts are deeper than surface level, I guess I'm trying to say that I was more frustrated with the lack of concern for this young man's emotional health than anything。 Holden needs a life coach, a school counselor or just a mentor of some kind to really invest in him。 It was difficult to see such a lost young man potentially squandering his access to an education。 。。。more

Immediate takeaway: If I hear the word 'goddam' one more time, I will probably scream。So。。。Holden Caulfield spends most of his time swearing (a lot), being depressed and admiring/insulting girls。 Salinger's style is unique and there were certainly some witty parts that I enjoyed。 However, the protagonist's voice and bitter attitude towards everything and everyone were difficult to ignore。 This was an interesting read and I am glad to have finally got to it, but I don't think I will be returning Immediate takeaway: If I hear the word 'goddam' one more time, I will probably scream。So。。。Holden Caulfield spends most of his time swearing (a lot), being depressed and admiring/insulting girls。 Salinger's style is unique and there were certainly some witty parts that I enjoyed。 However, the protagonist's voice and bitter attitude towards everything and everyone were difficult to ignore。 This was an interesting read and I am glad to have finally got to it, but I don't think I will be returning to it anytime soon。 。。。more
